How To Handle A Police Interrogation

The police believe that you are involved in a crime and want to bring you to the police station for an interrogation. This is a terrifying experience and many people don’t know how they should handle it.

What you shouldn’t do is try to resist the situation. Refusing to go will simply make your situation worse. It’s likely that the police will charge you with resisting arrest.

Don’t tell the police anything. It doesn’t matter if you’re guilty or innocent, there is always the chance that you could say something that will come back to haunt you. It is in your best interest to exercise your right to remain completely silent and to contact a lawyer. Once your lawyer has arrived, they will advise you about what you can and can’t answer during the interrogation.

Maintain control of your emotions. Getting brought to the police station for an interrogation is terrifying. It’s probably one of the most emotional experiences you’ll ever go through. As much as you want to give into your emotions and rant, rave and cry, it’s in your best interest to stay calm, cool and collected. Staying calm is the best way to prevent yourself from doing or saying something that the police could use against you.

Remember that there is no such thing a privacy at a police station. This means you can’t discuss your situation with anyone. There are cameras all over the place and it’s likely that any phone call you make will also be recorded. The entire time you’re in the police station, only say what your lawyer instructs you to say. They know how to handle an interrogation in a way that will prevent you from accidentally incriminating yourself.

If you do have to make a phone call to one of your loved ones, keep the call short and to the point. Explain where you are and what you need but don’t discuss any details of the case.

You’ll find that the more levelheaded you remain during the police interrogation, the easier the entire situation is.
